Hyderabad City Crafts Tour

Duration: 5-6 hours
All days of the week

This is a private car tour to explore the traditional arts and crafts of Hyderabad.

The tour covers the following:

  • The home of a family who are all engaged in ikat, block printing and screen printing. The unit is headed by an enterprising woman who has successfully carved a niche for herself in the weaving industry, and won a National Award for her work on ikat. While there is no formal shop (this is a home), some of the fabrics are available for purchase.
  • A handloom unit which is reviving dying brocade techniques such as himroo, mashru, paithani and jamavar. This social enterprise has broken with convention by teaching these traditionally male crafts to a group of widows, thus also providing them with livelihoods. The unit also produces kalamkari and ikat. The loom is run by a distinguished woman who also runs a school in the same premises for children from lower income backgrounds. The store attached to the workshop sells not only clothing and fabric, but other crafts as well such as dhokra metal craft, Cherial papier-mâché masks, Etikoppaka lacquer work, etc.
  • A zardosi (embroidery) unit and lac bangle making unit in the vibrant and busy bazaars around Charminar.

If you have already visited Charminar area and seen the nearby crafts, or want to do something else, you can visit a bidri (metal handicraft) workshop and a basket makers' colony.

This tour provides ample opportunities for shopping - the workshops have their own attached shops nearby, and the bazars have almost any arts and crafts you're looking for.
