Excursion to Warangal
Duration: Full day
All days of the week, preferably Wednesday
Warangal was the seat of the Kakatiya dynasty that ruled the Deccan from beginning of the 11th century to the early 14th century, before the advent of the Bahmanis. In this tour, we will visit the Ramappa temple and Warangal Fort, both Kakatiya constructions.
Ramappa temple is a grand temple to lord Shiva, a fine exemplar of Hindu architecture. Worship continues at the temple to this day. The temple is an imposing stone structure with intricate and marvellous carvings.
In the ruins of Warangal Fort, there are many Kakatiya ruins - sculptures, arches and idols all carved from stone. The visit to the fort also includes a walk through the residential areas around the main fortification, which are within the fort walls. You can see a local temple - the Swayambhu temple - which is famous for Shiv linga which is believed to have emerged spontaneously from the ground.
You can also walk around the villages in Warangal district, through a cattle trading fair (on Wednesdays), paddy fields, bazaars and shrines to local deities. So this trip is also a chance to see rural life.
